According to the National Cancer Institute the definition of skin cancer is cancer that forms in the tissues of the skin. Most skin cancers form in older people on parts of the body exposed to the sun or in people who have weakened immune systems. There are several types of skin cancer:

  •  Melanoma: skin cancer that forms in melanocytes (skin cells that make pigment)
  • Basal cell carcinoma: skin cancer that forms in the lower part of the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin)
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: skin cancer that forms in squamous cells (flat cells that form the surface of the skin)
  • Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin: skin cancer that forms in neuroendocrine cells (cells that release hormones in response to signals from the nervous system)

Estimated new cases and deaths from skin (nonmelanoma) cancer in the United States in 2012:

  • New cases: more than 2,000,000
  • Deaths: less than 1,000

Skin Cancer Treatment Options

skin-cancer-treatment-before-afterSFRO offers HDR Brachytherapy, electron therapy, as well as conventional radiation therapy to treat skin cancer.

Today, more and more patients are able to treat their skin cancers effectively and maintain excellent cosmetic results through an option called Skin HDR Brachytherapy. This innovative form of radiation works well to prevent local recurrence of the lesion.

Benefits of Skin HDR Applicators

  • Skin HDR Treatment can be completed in less than 10 days.
  • Skin HDR yields less overall fatugue compared to external beam radiation therapy.
  • Skin HDR applicators limit the irradiation to a required area using tungsten shielding.
  • Skin HDR applicators can easily be adapted to any shape and maintains a constant distance to the skin.
  • Skin HDR applicators treat to the correct depth without overexposing the skin, yielding good local control rates accompanied by excellent cosmetic functional results.
  • Skin HDR can treat almost any tumor size. A full evaluation for possible surgery and other available treatment options is also expected.

HDR Brachytherapy for Skin Cancer Treatment

During radiation therapy, the patient will visit the office two to three times a week.

A tiny radioactive source (seed) will then travel from the HDR machine, through a catheter, and into the surface device on the skin. The source sill remain in the device for about 10 minutes while it delivers a radiation. Once the patient has received the prescribed dose of radiation, the source is retracted back into the HDR machine. No radiation remains in the patient's body between treatments or after the final treatment is completed.
