Trigeminal Neuralgia involves the facial nerve called the trigeminal nerve. This nerve carries pain, feeling and other sensations from the brain to the skin of the face. The eye can also be affected when feeling sensations from the trigeminal nerve.

The parts of the face affected with pain from Trigeminal Neuralgia can be just a small area, the surface of the eye or the entire face. The pain occurs usually on one side of the face, around the eye, cheek, and the lower part of the face.

Causes of trigeminal neuralgia:
Trigeminal neuralgia is caused by pressure on the trigeminal nerve from a swollen blood vessel or tumor. Often it is difficult to detect an exact cause or origin.

Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia: Symptoms include intense flashes of pain, often sharp, electric-like spasms that last a few seconds, minutes or in some cases continuous. The pain can be associated with shaving or washing the face, brushing teeth, eating, drinking, talking or being exposed to the wind.

At SFRO we offer the CyberKnife for treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia.

The completely noninvasive nature of the CyberKnife System enables the treatment of intracranial targets, which provides a safe, painless and non-claustrophobic experience, within a very short treatment session.  Patients who have had treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia report a difference in the pain level as soon as the treatment is finished.

The CyberKnife System:

It's sub-milimeter accuracy is a crucial factor when treating spinal tumors, due to the ability for the CyberKnife to pinpoint a very small area
for treatment. The sparing of healthy tissue in areas surrounding the spine is vitally important. The goal is to kill the cancer cells so they don't spread further into
other areas of the body.
  • The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System is pain free, non-invasive - no incisions, no side effects.
  • With the CyberKnife, no frame is required to keep the head motionless.
  • It is offered as an outpatient procedure so you experience an almost immediate return to normal activity. For more information on CyberKnife click here.
